Fifty Shades of Fit

Indulge

I have been known to be easily seduced by the charms and promises of a new fitness regimen. I have a wandering eye. Although dance has always been my first love, I’m a woman of the world with a lot of experience in the sweat and muscles department. And although on the surface I may not seem to have a type, my forays into alternative fitness regimens all seem to have something in common – they are challenging, require thinking on your feet, distract me from real life and make the time fly by – like those hours-long phone calls with someone who so engrosses you that you lose time. And music. Yes, there is almost always music, or the sound of a soothing voice.

Rather than preventing me from falling asleep, like those all-night phone calls, these activities have helped me sleep better, sending me to the pillow exhausted. In my early years, dance, horse-back riding, gymnastics, and musical theatre were my passions. I wasn’t a smash into people, high impact sports type of gal, however, I played field hockey, soccer and, briefly, volleyball, where physical contact was rare, but well earned when it did happen. I’m not averse to a good slide tackle, eyes on the ball, of course. And I was fierce with a field hockey stick, mouth guard in… splattered with mud and grass.

Running, on its own, never did it for me. I go out of my mind, but not in a good way. I wonder what I’ve done to deserve it – the whole time – and I count the minutes til I can stop. I never have that gleeful ‘burn’ and satisfaction people talk about – but instead have that ‘can I please not be doing this, can I please be done now’ feeling, followed by a wheezy sense that my lungs will come out my mouth if I bend forward. I was a long distance runner in grade school, but I also didn’t have J-Lo’s butt to carry around with me.

Strangely, I can dance for hours, while running for ten minutes makes me want to die. It’s partly the lack of motivation (why run?) and since I get no joy out of it on its own (except if I feel like running spontaneously and can stop when I feel like it), I really struggle to make myself do it for the sake of my health. The only time way I can reconcile the objective-less ‘running’ with my goal-oriented, performance-competitive side is to imagine what might provoke me to feel that running would be worthwhile. Answer: running AWAY from something. I’m seriously considering one of those zombie obstacle course races – where the undead chase you. That is a motive I can get behind.

So, all of this is to say, that I am newly smitten. After spending time enjoying long-term, non-monogamous relationships with hula hooping, circus school, yoga, hot yoga, salsa, contact improv and other completely engaging fit-but-fun ways of getting my body moving, once again I’m at the pole studio. It has all the challenge and reward of the other activities I love. The learning curve is hugely motivating. I feel an incredible burn and giddiness when I notice my own improvement. It has music and creativity, technical skill, problem solving (ever try getting your hips above your head by inverting onto a pole from standing?) and I get to dance around to music while sweating my ass off.

Pole Fit is a lovely balance of ‘muscles and mascara.’ And anything that can get me to put on a pair of shorts and not feel hugely self-conscious is getting an A+ in my books. I’m too busy wondering where my hand goes, fumbling with sweaty palms and hoping I look confident and cool to worry about how my butt looks. And when I’m smiling, it’s because I just did an awesome boomerang, diamond, hang ten or ballerina… even though my arms are burning and my abs hurt from laughing at the last five times I didn’t quite get it.

So, of course, I’m making another date.

I Liebst It: the Liebster Award

Indulge

It’s a new season, officially. It seems like the time is just flying. A few short months ago, I joined WordPress and started blogging about life, love and fashion. Then, just as the crisp temperatures started to creep in, signalling Fall’s arrival, I got a lovely note; I was lucky enough to be nominated for a Liebster Award! I’d like to send out a huge thank you to Autumn Updates (https://autumnupdates.wordpress.com/), you should check out her frank, on-point observations about the world – she has a really fresh perspective!

It’s really touching to see/hear that the blog I started for myself (to allow me a place to indulge in things outside my work life) has been a positive, fun, informative place for others. I love writing and definitely love fashion. I do these things for me, but if someone else finds pleasure in them, it makes things all the better. Accordingly, I love to see others who write because they love it – for the release, for the humour, for the sadness, the questions, the angst, the inspiration. And I never met a fashion collage I didn’t love.

For more on the award rules and my answers to Autumn Updates’ questions, read on!

——————————————————-

So first, the rules for the Liebster Award are:

1. Once nominated make a post to thank and link the person that nominated you.

2. Include the Liebster award sticker award somewhere in your post.

3. Nominate 5 – 10 other bloggers who have 200 followers or less that you think are worthy of this award. Let them know you have nominated them by commenting on one of their posts. You can nominate the person who tagged you.

4. Answer the questions by the person that nominated you, and create questions of your own for your nominees.

5. Copy these rules onto your post.

My questions and answers for the ‘mini Q & A’ are:

  1. What do you love most about blogging?

I love having a personal goal that no one but me holds me accountable for. I wanted to write more. I wanted to put pen to paper (or at least fingers to keyboard) and find a place to visually and verbally express myself. I have so much to be thankful for and in life we sometimes get bogged down by what isn’t going right; here I find myself feeling immensely grateful – for the privilege of having a life where enough things are going right that I have happy things to write about – and when things are going poorly, I can channel it; writing helps me work through my feelings.

2. When you’re sad, what do you do to cheer yourself up?

I eat cinnamon buns. I drink wine. I make videos of our cats with my wife. I call my mom. I dance.

3. If you could be any Disney character, who would you be and why?

Ariel from The Little Mermaid, because I can seriously rock red locks, I love to sing and I definitely have thing-a-ma-bobs a-plenty.

Little Mermaid?

Little Mermaid?

4. Where in the world do you want to visit?

I have traveled a great deal and would love to revisit Brazil. I left pieces of my heart there. I have a list of places my wife and I want to travel to: Portugal, Iceland, Thailand, Peru, Australia… One day we’ll get to all of them.

Até logo, Brasil! Estou com saudades de voce!

Até logo, Brasil! Estou com saudades de voce!

5. What is your Starbucks order?

London Fog, Chai Latte, Vanilla Latte or… most likely a regular old coffee from anywhere… with almond milk.

6. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Keep doing what you do. It has been amazing reconnecting with old friends and acquaintances from high school and realizing that the way we perceived ourselves is often clouded by the fear that we will be judged. I conveyed a confidence that was pretty compelling, but felt like a bit of an impostor – constantly doubting and striving. I wish I had known, like I know now, retrospectively, that being a bit of a free-spirit and a bleeding heart, but being a hard-ass when it came to standing up for what I believe in and being willing to fight the good fight (especially where social justice is concerned) was something that would get me respect later in life. Respecting myself and my judgement, to try and do what I believed was right, even if it was hard, is something I’d push myself to keep doing. Lastly: keep holding out for love. She is right around the corner!

Big kisses to you, my amazing wife!

Big kisses to you, my amazing wife!

Big thank you to you, Autumn Updates. I appreciate the love!

I would like to nominate:

& the questions for my nominees are:

  1. What are the small things that bring you joy?
  2. What smell reminds you of childhood?
  3. Is there a song that evokes a wonderfully vivid memory for you?
  4. When do you feel most yourself?
  5. What is the biggest obstacle in your life?
  6. What can’t you wait to do in your lifetime?

I cannot wait to hear about all your amazing ideas. I enjoy reading and learning from you. Cheers to a great community! Thanks again to Autumn Updates, and best of luck in life and blogging!

Sincerely,

A

Toronto Film Festival 2015

Indulge

Every fall, in Toronto, the stars flock to our friendly, clean, politely eager city for the Toronto International Film Festival. They start to tag themselves on Instagram and their social media feeds are flooded with cool images of celebs themselves and beaming snaps of locals beside (or at arms’ length from) these rare birds, who have come to rest here for another year of TIFF.

Festival Parties in full swing.

Ellen Page, Sir Patrick Stewart, Rachel McAdams, Dame Helen Mirren, Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore… all the on camera talent you’d expect at a ‘world class’ festival, but also the behind-the-scenes darlings who bring you the best cinema of the world. The magazines all print their ‘Where to spot celeb’ recommendations, for hangouts and star gazing during the festival, and more often than not you end up hearing from someone who happened upon a hole in the wall where Drew Barrymore was drinking with friends (in past years that was at Sweaty Betty’s).

And while the big wigs of media are interviewing the most recognizable film stars, my wife is catching up with some of the lesser known, but no less talented directors, writers, producers and emerging talent; sharing the E-Talk Lounge, she is covering films in foreign languages and welcoming a slew of talent who will be featured on the Movie Network, for E-Talk Movie Moments. I, lucky me, am joining her for the day to get an inside look and true to Canadian form, I’m being treated like gold by everyone we encounter, because you never know who the person next to you might be, or what film they’re here with – and Canadians really are just that nice.

We started our day at the Intercontinental, where she had interviews for the films Endorphine and London Road.

I was comfy cool in a pair of chunky heeled Frye boots, a black Zara carry all, bracelets from White Feather Designs, a black leather tee from H&M, tweed topper and black Second Denim Yoga jeans.

There were lots of freebies so a shoulder bag kept me hands-free.

Drizzling weather outdoors called for a hat and a cheap and cheerful H&M version kept my head dry and hair at bay.

Fit Girl Challenge – Surprise Guest

Indulge

And now for something completely different. I was reading a lifestyle magazine and raised an eyebrow at the latest craze “Figurerobics”.

This new South Korean fitness trend is spearheaded by the Korean equivalent to a ‘hot mom’ – the delightfully fresh and motivating Jung Dayeon. If this is what moms look like in South Korea, barely out of high school and rocking short shorts (well!), count me in. If I look half as good as this for an investment of 30 minutes a day, I am willing to try it.

So, what is Figurerobics?

One of many coordinated fitness getups.

One of many coordinated fitness getups.

In their matchy-matchy fitness outfits, reminiscent of Christina Aguilera in her “Genie In a Bottle” days, this is a quick 30 minute workout series, with a whole bunch of different video options, that would be a perfect fit for days when you are not feeling like leaving the house, but want to move your body.

Genie in a Bottle.

Genie in a Bottle. Christina’s style is a definite inspiration for the Figurerobics look, which heavily references the 90’s cropped tops and cargo pants.

eDljOGw5MTI=_o_christina-aguilera---genie-in-a-bottle

Figurerobics is this video multiplied to the length of 30 minutes.

Looking a little like the extras from a Justin Timberlake video, these infinitely peppy and good looking workout folks made it very easy to forget the minutes rolling by.

Looking a little like the extras from a Justin Timberlake video, these infinitely peppy and good looking workout folks made it very easy to forget the minutes rolling by.

Deceptively small movements actually produce quite a good arm burn and get your heart rate up with a combination of dance (jazz) warm up, traditional workout class and sexy K-Pop moves (lots of hip rolls and encouraging winks from Jung as you complete your 8 counts of each movement).

All in all, this is a fun way to spend thirty minutes and I can see this becoming my go-to quick fix for snowy days this winter.

This summer has been all about trying new things. What is your favourite workout regimen?

Hip Gift List: What to Get When You’ve Gotta Get It Good

Indulge

There are a number of gift-giving occasions ahead of me. What do you get for the artsy friend of your mother who is hosting you at her luxe cottage for a few days? What would your bestie-sisterwife cool girl living downtown like for her birthday? What kind of present do you get for your designer friend who has impressive taste and a weak spot for themed parties? The anniversary of my brother-in-law’s birth is rolling around… what do you get a guy who gets everything he needs? What is the perfect gift for a family friends’ anniversary party?

A few other questions to ask:

How much can I spend? How well do I know them? What’s their style? What do you want your gift to convey? (ie. We have one mind and I knew you’d like this immediately when I saw it. Or… You two deserve a special night with a great bottle of wine and a movie).

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME

ANNIVERSARY

untitled-13

I am a wine lover and maybe that makes me biased. How about a bottle of sparkling wine, like an Iced Cuvee from Trius, or another bottle that is special to you, paired with a gift card for Itunes – signed with a note that suggests they curl up together for a romantic movie at home? Or get a fun new playlist to listen to as they share the bottle before going out dancing (and taking a taxi there and back)? If you know their style well, perhaps a picture frame and a suggestion to print (or offer your services on this one) a photo from the day of the party to celebrate their love. My wife and I have taken a photo each year of our relationship, standing the same way. One day we’ll need a whole wall for these. Perhaps we’ll make a flip book.

GIFTS FOR COOL GIRL FRIENDS/ AND COOL OTHERS

When you search ‘hipster gifts for women’ an array of succulents and terrariums come up. If you’ve been reading this blog, you know I love the terrariums from crownflorastudio.com.

A dish of succulents could be the perfect thing for the girl who has everything, especially if she's a plant killer. Suit the container to her style.

If all else fails, enroll them in circus school, life drawing, wine tasting… or archery. More on that later.

There are some really great ideas, if you have time to ship, at: http://www.uncommongoods.com/, or on Etsy.com.

Locally, in Toronto, there are some great ideas at The Drake General Store, Crown Flora, Lavish and Squalor – try for local businesses 🙂

Happy Hunting! Any and all suggestions welcome in the comments.

Mama Mia Me

Indulge

“Mama Mia,

Here I go again. My my… ” Meryl Streep did look pretty awesome in the film, like a boho goddess. Damian Cooper: he’s enough to make me want an island romance (no offence, my love). And the island’s laid back, picturesque backdrop has been calling me since before the movie, and even before the live musical version hit Toronto, starring Camilla Scott, the former Canadian daytime talk show host (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0778926/). Seriously, look it up.

So I’m going. Finally.

Wrong island. Right vibe. But, there should definitely be singing.

We are heading to Greece to celebrate a wedding and I couldn’t be more excited. I cannot wait to see the island of Santorini in person and my wife and I have treated ourselves to a gorgeous hotel for our stay.

We got a head start on our Santorini dreaming with our friends at YYZImports.com, while styling and being photographed for their Summer release of their collection. The colours were vivid and incredible. I could happily wear every outfit that we shot yesterday. Stay tuned for an inside peek of their gems and the behind the scenes shots from our day in the sun.

Moving Furniture is Genetic

Home Sweet, Indulge, style

Re-arranging, specifically furniture, runs in my family. On my mother’s side. I can’t go more than a few months without moving things around. People visiting are routinely treated to a double-take when things are reversed, separated, painted, flipped, and after a while, you can hardly imagine it wasn’t like this all along.

Really though, my mom, left unattended at my house, had rearranged all the kitchen and linen drawers, texting that she’d stopped herself short at moving large furniture items, only because she couldn’t do so without scratching the floor… or possibly because she felt it might be overstepping. My aunt, recently relocated to Niagara-on-the-lake, deliberately replaced all her previous furniture (heavy, solidly made pieces) with new, light Swedish farmhouse style pieces, for the express purpose of being able to move them on a whim.

photo 2

The open concept living area, with mirror (a pre-existing feature from the past owner) and lots of light.

After having all our ducts, dryer vent, etc., cleaned, the urge hit me to rid the whole main floor of dust. The vent guys paid us a wonderful compliment, saying that it was obvious that ‘cool’ (‘hip’ I think he said) people live here, and that he loved all our art. So, the newest incarnation of our living space involved separating the sectional and replacing a rich, woven tapestry with a lighter spring one, as well as flipping the vertical Ikea shelving units onto their sides.

photo 3 (1)

Felix loves the newly upholstered leather cushion for the ‘zen couch,’ which replaced the velvet cushions (major cat hair attraction). Hand-sewn fabric cushions are easily changed-up for a fresh look.

photo 3 (2)

I created large-scale art to brighten the space, featuring the lyrics from “Sugar Sugar” (one of our favourite songs). The shelving is home to records, ceramics, an “A” made from all the wine corks of our courtship, and the paper bouquets from our wedding.

photo 3

Felix loves a spot to stretch out, in front of the Urban Outfitters tapestry that makes its way from tablecloth, to bedspread to wall-hanging.

photo 4 (2)

Brutus, the controversial (to my mother) long-horn skull adds some macabre irony to our very feminine space. We like to imagine that he dialogues with Betsey (who now lives as an area rug). What I like, however, is that the skull was sourced from a friends farm where all parts of the animal are utilized and animals roam free in large pastures.

photo 4

A tagine hides the remotes, and colourful coasters protect the surface of Granddad’s WWII trunk.

photo 5 (1)

Separating the sectional gave us a nice new arrangement for hosting, or t.v. viewing.

photo 5

All lit-up: our custom ampersand and ‘A’ marquis lights help to illuminate the space in the evenings, and make the vintage cut crystal decanters sparkle. Mirrors make it possible for art to be seen from every angle.

photo 1 (1)

Chester, our girl-cat, isn’t quite sure about this arrangement.

photo 2 (1)

The dining table, and make-shift marking area, is warm and colourful, with art done, by request, by my mother.

photo 2 (2)

Looking back into the space from the dining room, the living areas are divided, but open.

At the very least, the benefit of all this moving around is a solid calorie burn, and thoroughly cleaned … everything. Plus, it reminds me that my wife loves me very much when she puts up no fuss at all as she comes home from work, only to find me requiring her help to put the finishing touches on our space.

What inspires you to move furniture?

Body Blitz and L’Unita

Foodie, Indulge

It’s always a good time with Lindsay; now a globe-trotting sommelier, she and I have been friends since high school. We had a summer ritual of weekly visits to Body Blitz https://bodyblitzspa.com/ where, for $300, you could have an unlimited pass for the summer months to visit as often as you want. For us, this meant Wednesday spa visits to soak in the epsom salt and Dead Sea salt pools, cold plunge, eucalyptus steam room and sauna. We always followed this up with wine tasting, her day job/my pass time.

Yesterday we cashed in on a blog interview that I did for Body Blitz. (see article here: http://blog.bodyblitzspa.com/2014/09/in-waters-with-alison-carson.html)

As a thank you for the interview I got to try an incredibly luxurious sweet ginger + milk body glow. The treatment included a citrus-mint body wash,  ginger body scrub,  warm milk with sweet orange oil and almond treatment, and massage to finish, working in a warm grape seed body oil. It was an hour of heaven.

After you get past the part where you realize you haven’t been ‘washed’ like this since you were a baby, and the fact that the plastic apron worn by the spa attendant is vaguely reminiscent of Dexter in body-disposal-mode, it is so amazing to be under a heat lamp having a sweet, soft-spoken angel pamper you for sixty minutes.

Spartacus: Pampered and Luxurious, without the problematic power dynamics and violence

At one point I found myself imagining that this must be what ancient rich housewives must have felt like (without the slavery, obviously), but that if every person on Earth received this treatment we could probably solve every global conflict known to man. It was that good. I was blissed-out and elated for the rest of the day.

I joked with my wife about how delicious I smelled; “smell me!”

She told me I smelled like a white person, then smiled and said, “Vanilla.”
