Fit Girl Challenge: Day 7

Foodie

So, the tortilla chips won. It was too much for me. I caved and ate more than a handful; fortunately the guide prepares you for this and advises that if you get off track, the whole day isn’t a write off. Basically, you’re already doing great, so allow yourself some slip ups and congratulate yourself for being human.

The food has been delicious and we’ve overcome some serious hurdles, namely a visit to my parents’ house (in wine country), a trip to the theatre, and a baby shower. Phewf! Success. And we spent last night (by we I mean my amazing wife) getting our food ready for today, day 8, week two.

The past few days have seen no end to my enjoyment of Cherry Pie Fridge Oats. Seriously, yummm.

The food we’ve enjoyed has had colour, variety and lots of great textures. Here is a sampling of some of the yummy lunches and dinners.

I joined Allia at work, taking our lunch and dinner for a full day of activites: Film screening in the morning (of Mistress America – very funny and well-written). Herbal tea with a friend. (Hi, Katey!)

We went to browse the books at Indigo/Chapters. Here are some of our faves. There is a lot more time for reading when you don’t have to worry about what’s in your fridge. Now that we spend less time looking in the fridge there is more time a lot of things. wink wink.

At work, Allia got some stuff done while I read a book and drank my water. We ate our delicious lunch on the patio, located on the Much Music Roof.

It was easy enough to travel with our pre-prepared food and to enjoy taking time to eat slowly.

We had a similar approach for the time we spent in Niagara on the Lake with my family. We treated it like a restaurant, choosing protein and grains carefully and eating lots of greens. I had one of my two servings of alcohol for the week in the afternoon, sitting by the pool. How can you come to wine country and not partake? (I can think of a few ways, but that’s not very appealing). Then I gave myself a pass and had a second glass at dinner, before we headed to the theatre to see The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Guide to the Scriptures  at The Shaw Festival http://www.shawfest.com/playbill/the-intelligent-homosexual/story/ . The play, by Tony Kushner, was brilliantly acted and intense. We enjoyed tea at intermission and a stroll in the gardens.

This week’s reward was a mani-pedi in a style/colour you don’t usually get. I did my own nails, but chose a shade from my mom’s collection. At the end of week two, we get to treat ourselves to a new workout outfit. I have my eye on Titika’s Dip Crop (which is on sale!), and one of these stylin’ workout tops or bras.

The purses have been purged.

The purses have been purged.

And I suppose the Christmas gift bag is apropos – it has been a gift to ourselves to free up more space. After purging (aka de-cluttering) our shoes, we moved on to purses and jewellery. We’ve made two hundred bucks. The photo, above, is of the bags full of bags that we unloaded from our life. So many of the items have been making us laugh. Why are we holding onto this stuff? It’s easier to poke fun at my wife. She’s Jamaican. We both know she’s Jamaican; why does she need 12 different logo emblazoned bags, t-shirts, sandals and picture frames that remind her – she’s Jamaican. And the colours don’t really go with our scheme.

There is a certain fun to deciding, consciously, to get rid of things. It feels like taking control. Bye-bye, Jamaica totes – we’ll totes miss you.

Anything that wasn’t purchased by the consignment shop is going to be put into the clothing swap I’m hosting, then everything not taken – goes to a charity donation drop-off center. I am feeling lighter.

I’m holding off on reading the next chapters of Marie Kondo’s book – anticipating that as I head into the basement I will need to bolster myself (for moral and spiritual support) as I attack the symbolic depths of my past – journals from my year abroad in Brazil, musical instruments I no longer play. Sports paraphernalia. Assorted strange and random, useful and useless items.

Chesterella: A rags-to-riches feline.

Chester(ella). She used to live under a car, in an alley on Queen Street in Toronto. As a 3 month old kitten, she was brought to me, never having been touched by a person before. After years of building trust, we are besties. I’m her favourite human… and even though you have to work for her love, she is my favourite cat. She is SO fluffy and looks deceptively chubby, but at bath time you can clearly see that she’s petite under all that fur. She sometimes falls asleep with her tongue stuck out. She likes to break into closets. She sharpens her claws on my leather couch.  Everyone has stories about their pets. I don’t need to tell them. If you have pets, you already know.

Animal videos and pictures rule the internet. And people benefit from that. We get hours of procrastination and cuteness.

Today I saw this wonderful post, about people who have adopted the oldest cat they could find at their local shelter: http://www.boredpanda.com/old-adopted-cats/

Consider adopting, if you have room in your heart.

Now, this is her favourite way to relax.

Fit Girl Day 3: Definite Cravings and Some Sore Muscles

Foodie

I sidle by the fridge. I peek into the pantry.

I’m having a really hard time staying away from the half finished bag of chia seed tortilla chips on top of the fridge. The meal plan is satisfying, yes, but my snack habit is hard to break. I had a delicious breakfast of cherry parfait oatmeal. Definitely not tired of that, yet.

Lunch is looming, but so is my desire to eat. I can feel some soreness from yesterday’s hike and glute-focused targeted toning exercises. Drink more water. Ask if you’re hungry or… bored.

I’ve been keeping busy, going through my KonMari purging, very systematically. It happens every year once summer starts. I want to get all my projects done, and I’m super motivated, but part of me also wants to sit on my butt binge-watching Netflix. Admitting you have a problem is the first step, right?

Our pizza party dinner of veggie-pizza was super yummy. Tonight, we have soft corn tortillas with grilled veggies and chicken, black beans, avocado, etc.

To busy myself I’m heading to the gym; off to sell all our old purses, or donate them; planning a clothing swap; re-hanging pictures on the walls; filling holes and touching up paint. Maybe I’ll clean all the baseboards…

Maybe I’ll take up my friend’s offer to go tubing down the Credit River. Wink. Summer is here.

Endless Summer: an Urban Adventure – YYZ Imports’ Summer Shoot

style

Welcome back, summer in Toronto. We had another awesome day in the sunshine, romping around on Queen Street West. The Queen Street streetcar was named one of the world’s BEST trolly rides, which completely makes sense as the tracks take you from east to west (or vice versa) from beach, through Cabbage Town, the busy Yonge Street and financial district, past City Hall, the Opera and Ballet, Much Music and the former Speaker’s Corner, along Queen Street’s shopping district, and on to the hip West-end. It’s a ride full of colour and intersecting cultures. For three bucks that’s pretty good value.

For YYZ Imports’ “Endless Summer” collection we hit the streets and found some excellent places to showcase the wares from Jess and Bern, who have brought some very cool pieces home from abroad.

People stopped us on the street to see what was going on, and many of the passers-by wanted to know where they could buy the pieces on display.

I loved this pop of colour so much that I took the whole outfit with me the following week on vacation!

Styling this shoot was the perfect inspiration for my own travels. I even borrowed a few pieces from Jess, one of YYZ’s owners, for my trip to Greece. It was my own personal vacation-look-book, complete with live models.

Great arm candy, on a very foxy lady.

All these awesome pieces were shot in one afternoon by Carmen Farrell, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Carmen-Farrell-Photography/111550845554690 and are available right now on YYZ Imports’ page. The colours are undeniably vibrant and the pieces add such a punch to brights, or a nice canvas of white. Lastly, another thing I love is that these pieces support two local entrepreneurs who are making travel and style, their passions, a reality.

One of my favourite funny aspects of the day was the makeshift hula hoop changeroom that the girls put together, facilitating some stealthy public outfit swaps. We shot in a park along the busy streetcar route and watching the models pop out of the hoop in new clothes drew a bit of a crowd.  To celebrate, we ended our afternoon at The Beaver – eating chicken tikka nachos. Delish. Cheers to summer and to all the adventures you can handle!

Fit Girl Challenge: Day 2

Foodie

Day 1 was a breeze. We really enjoyed preparing and eating the delicious meals. Breakfast was cherry oatmeal with yogurt and chia. We had a snack. I felt satisfied and full. Lunch was a tremendously yummy roast veggie, hummus and grilled chicken.

Very satisfying and lots of variety in our lunchtime meal. We opted to skip the rice and used up some potatoes we had in the house.

KonMari and Me: A Month of Marie Kondo’s De-cluttering

DIY

I started my summer reading with something my close friends will find hilariously fitting: THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF TIDYING UP. Described as a “guide to decluttering your home… Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes readers step-by-step through her revolutionary KonMari Method for simplifying, organizing, and storing.” This is serious stuff. My friend, Bronwen, wrote a funny, but somewhat scathing review of this ‘methodology’ but my interest was piqued.

My newest book indulgence inspired the month-long challenge.

My newest book indulgence inspired the month-long challenge.

This kind of wacky, eccentricity seems right up my alley. Kondo asks, “Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?” Yes, Marie, yes. They do. And I am, admittedly an OCD (mildly) freak who has used a label maker to identify the drawers (by content) in her cupboard. I have a ‘hanger system’. I have come to understand that these routines/rituals/house rules, which others find weird (but which they often concur make complete sense) are what keep me sane at home, creating a safe-haven where I can FIND my things easily and know where they go; this is a necessary process after a long day at work, teaching people’s children, in an environment which is largely chaotic, messy, disorganized and dirty. I’m going all in for this one.

This is my month of KonMari Method. As she advised, I started with SHOES.

Put ALL the shoes in a pile. All items of the same type. Get them from ANYWHERE they might be hiding and put them together so you can pick them up, one at a time, for the Konmari Test.

I made/encouraged my wife to participate also. She and I moving in together, early in our relationship, was less a ‘thing’ than the amalgamation of our two closets. ‘You moved into the DRESSING ROOM?’ our friends would joke. This shared space requires a shared approach. Plus, she’s wonderfully ruthless.

Two women equal a LOT of shoes. A LOT.

Even our cat, Felix, found this process exhausting. He found a comfy spot later, on top of shoe mountain, to observe our success.

I am no Imelda Marcos, but I still managed to generate and get rid of an impressive pile. Marie, I feel lighter already.

Imelda Marcos, amongst her shoe collection; impressive for a first lady of a country that was bankrupt.

Imelda Marcos, amongst her shoe collection; impressive for the First Lady of a country that was bankrupt.

Things were not so dire for us. Actually, I cheated a little, keeping a few pairs of VERY nineties shoes (for costumes), which actually makes total sense, because I love Hallowe’en and really, you can’t buy shit like this anymore. I’m just starting, so I expect a few growing pains. Also, I needed to keep my dance shoes, tap shoes, hip hop shoes, ballet shoes…

Ferdinand Marcos was overthrown in February 1986. Philippine authorities took possession of what assets could be found, including Imelda's trove of 2700 shoes. No developing country can excuse its leaders' recklessly decking themselves out this way while the people struggle to make ends meet.

Good job, Alison. Imelda would be proud ... that you had so many to start with; ambivalent that you were getting rid of so many; impressed that so many of the ones remained based on the Konmarie test of asking,

Good job, Alison. Imelda would be proud … that you had so many to start with; ambivalent that you were getting rid of so many; impressed that so many of the ones that remained passed the KonMari test of asking, “Do these spark joy?”

So, where do you put all these tidy, joy-sparking shoes? In clear plastic shoe boxes, obviously. Another thing that inspires joy…is that once you get rid of the things that are weighing you down, you can make room for things that you really love – and from selling the castoffs to a consignment store, as well as donating many pairs to Goodwill, we have some money to put towards a few pairs we REALLY love. We sold nine pairs for a profit of $58.00 and may list another online, plus we have three reusable bags FULL to drop off for charity.

Tidy and with more room to breathe, my shoes are happier (according to Marie Kondo).

Keep your peepers peeled for the next assault on my personal possessions: The Accessories Department.

Fit Girl Challenge: Day 1

Foodie

Fit Girl Challenge, as proposed, starts today. Key ideas: get serious, and enjoy the process.

I have drank about two liters of water (I’m ahead of the game). The cherry oatmeal and yogurt parfait with chia seeds that I had for breakfast was SERIOUSLY delicious. If things are this yummy, I think I will be happy to stay focused.

Biggest challenge that I foresee? 2 servings of alcohol … per week.

Puppy Love

Love

Ever cried on an ATV? It’s a long story, that only really lasts four days.

It started one night in Santorini, at the bar of the El Greco Hotel, where we were celebrating and saying goodbyes following our friends Lindsay and Rob’s wedding. Amidst the caipirinhas and wine, in wanders the most adorable stray puppy.

She wound her way through the legs under the table and found her way straight to my lap. She was a gorgeous strawberry blonde, with the ears of a spaniel and eyes to melt your heart. She was friendly, but shaking. Clearly hungry. We pitched in to get her some food and she cuddled with us. On our friend Jas’ lap, I joked as I took their picture “family photo.”

It had entered my mind that this puppy could not live her life as a stray. I’d seen how fast people drive on the island. Her side also concerned me. It was puffy and if pressed gently, there seemed to be movement below the surface. I was afraid she was full of worms.

That evening she followed us to our room. I closed the door and re-opened it to find her sitting there, staring up at me, big-eyed and adorable, breaking my heart. I got her fresh water and walked her to the company of some late-nighters from England. I hardly slept.

Mostly I worried she would be hungry, or sick, with that mysterious side bulge. Fortunately, I thought, she’d found her way to the winding, protected maze of El Greco’s villas, where no cars were near and there was an endless supply of tourists with a soft spot for cute, and buffet breakfasts to share.

11247896_574119809397142_1082258576954488128_n

Our little pal, Santo, aka Gaia.

Next morning she was at the breakfast spot, happily sharing sausages and deli meats from guests’ plates. She sat with us by the pool and while cuddling, I resolved that not knowing what would happen to her would slowly weigh on me until I found more answers.

The front desk didn’t recognize her, but put me in touch with Helga, a worker from Santorini’s SAWA http://www.sawasantorini.org/. Allia, my wife, also looked into animal rescue in Greece and quickly received a reply from PAWS Pelion (near Athens); they advised to get her to a vet quickly and try to start the process. We also got the contact for SAWA (Santorini Animal Welfare Association) christina@sawasantorini.org

Helga met us at the hotel and fostered her, helping us get her to the vet. Within the day she had her rabies vaccine, de-worming, tick/flea medicine and we had her microchipped. The side, it turns out, had two teeth punctures that had let air below the skin’s surface and the vet, Margherita, shaved and disinfected the spots, assuring us that the air would drain on its own. Very relieved. She was such a trooper and we got her a passport, named her Gaia (pronounced GAY-a, ironically, in Greek). We were so close.

All that remained was to get her paperwork of permission from the government, allowing her to leave, and we had two days before our departure. Our travel agent also had to see if it was possible/allowed to get her on our flights. This proved more difficult, as it was Canada Day (on a Thursday) and there was no one in the office.

I tossed and turned again. Waiting was killing me. But the amount of support we had was incredible. I was so worried that somewhere along the line we would run into trouble and be unable to get her home with us. I posted:

“We are loving Santorini and we fell in love with a gorgeous little stray puppy! We have her shots, passport and are waiting on the okay paperwork from the Greek Government. Only once we are on the plane to Canada will I be relaxed. The last hurdle will be the small flight from Santorini to Athens, then onto the second plane. If anyone knows a dog lover in Athens who can step in on short noticed if we get stopped, please let us know. We are returning on Friday.”

Replies:

-Amazing!!! That’s the best story ever! You work fast too, you already found a vet and did all the paperwork in the last day?? Crazy!!

-Sending good puppy vibes! All will be well!

-There’s a lady in Toronto who operates Tails From Greece Rescue – her email address is diannealdan@sympatico.ca – I’ve seen her postings before on petfinder but she doesn’t have an actual website (but is a registered charity). She might be able to help you.

There were dozens of replies, offering help and support, six different people from the wedding offered to pitch in to help cover the costs if we could get Gaia home, and even the hotel staff was on board. Teodora from the front desk said she would foster her for the months it might take to get the paperwork and sort out a flight, the bartender Vasilis said he’d give us 50 Euros towards her travel. Everyone, it seemed, was invested in helping this little girl get adopted. She had won everyone over.

The story took a sad turn, as we found that the paperwork needed to come from Naxos and we’d need to go to the harbour to pick it up in Fira. We thought, due to the language barrier, that we were meeting a person at a desk or office down at the harbour. We did not understand that we were meeting a letter, held on the boat, that would not be left IN Fira unless in our own hands. We narrowly missed the Blue Star Delos as it left the dock, after a twisting and turning ATV ride down the side of the caldera to the port. The port police officers, a group of macho, chain-smoking uniformed men, seemed genuinely moved as my eyes brimmed with tears and they registered how sad this moment was, after radioing the vessel to confirm that the letter was on board… heading back to Naxos. We were departing the next morning and still didn’t have a confirmation about flights for Gaia, with our time difference and the question of her documents, age and timeline of the vaccines. It seemed like a sign, but there was also some VERY good news.

Although I cried, full-on tears, as we drove back up the side of the cliff, Elena and Teodora had given us some hope – the owner of the El Greco was an animal lover and agreed to take Gaia, to adopt her if we couldn’t, having heard of all our efforts to do so.

Post: “We just found out our last document from the Greek government, authorizing the transport of the puppy fell through. We tried SO hard. With the language, time difference, Canada Day, short time period and tons of contradictory info between two airlines, it’s amazing we got so close. I am so sad, because we were really invested in this little sweetheart. BUT overall I ‘m really proud of us for trying and I think the way everyone here (and online) got behind us is a sign that there are a lot of big hearts out there. So big, in fact, that the owner of the El Greco (our hotel) heard about this little gal and has agreed to adopt her. So, our goal is complete; she won’t be with us, but she WILL be healthy, happy, safe and loved. Thanks to my wife, Allia, for jumping in with me, all in, and consoling me when it didn’t work out. The staff and friends here for Lindsay’s wedding have been amaaaazing. Hugs.”

We went to say our goodbyes to her that night, visiting her at Helga’s work, where she greeted us with tail wags and face licks. She was going to have an amazing life. With a final hug and, yes, more tears, we went off to enjoy our last night in Santorini. She was going to be a very happy girl.

We left her passport and vet records, plus a note, at the hotel and quickly received word that the owner had come to get her, and would email us with updates. Update number one, from the owner Maria, was that her brother had fallen in love with Gaia and taken her home. We also received one final assurance that we could contact her to get updates. What better end to the story could anyone hope for?

If you, like us, fall in love on vacation, get the process started early.  Contact a local vet and get in touch with the animal welfare/rescue agency in the area. Also, contact your airlines immediately to arrange for travel on board your flights, checking age, weight and carrier size restrictions, as well as the necessary documents for the country you are travelling from, and your destination country. One final must: tell your country’s customs agents that YOU are adopting/own the puppy as your pet, not that it is being brought in FOR adoption, as this may be seen as a commercial transaction. Good luck!

This whole experience reaffirms that it is so much better to care and be invested, even if it’s sometimes sad, than to watch, hoping someone else will step in. Sometimes it feels really good to cry.

Fit Girl Challenge: A Mediterranean Vacation Inspires a Summer Overhaul

Foodie

Fresh off the plane from a week-long Greek island vacation, so many stories to tell. More on that later, though. Allia and I are embarking on a new journey, a new challenge: Fit Girl. Three months of lifestyle, diet and exercise inspiration. We are going to try it, full-tilt, and see what kind of results we get. We are inspired.

We had a beautiful time on our vacation (more on that later). But, we are two girls who don’t like to say no – to baklava, to wine, to second helpings, to walking up moonlit cobblestone streets, to streetside vendors and to jumping in the ocean. We are looking for a plan and some balance. Right now we eat great food, with excellent ingredients and great taste, but with little mind to conscious portioning and calories. I never met a gelato I didn’t like.

Ready to hit the grocery store, fridge empty since we just got back from Greece. Let's do this!

Ready to hit the grocery store, fridge empty since we just got back from Greece. Let’s do this!

I’ve never considered myself to be a ‘skinny’ girl. Except in my tween years, when I ate whatever I wanted and danced 14 hours a week, played sports and did theatre after school. I was overscheduled and had the metabolism of a teeny bopper. So, given that lots has changed, I’ve broadened my horizons (and the horizon of my hips is now broad enough). I know more than most about proper diet and exercise. I have all the tools to get into great shape; I’ve never really believed, however, that the body I could have and the shape I could get into would truly be worth the sacrifices I’d have to make to get there.

Apparently, we'll look like this!

Apparently, we’ll look like this!

Without sacrificing pleasure and taste, we are pumped up to get into our best adult shape yet. We signed on for Fit Girl’s Guide- The Girly-Girl’s Guide to Getting Fit ( https://fitgirlsguide.com/ ). The program is a PDF you purchase and it’s recommended that you try it with a friend. Community and a goal. I love it already. Stay tuned for success (and hurdle) updates. Here is a picture of our first week’s groceries, approximately $120 (Canadian) for two people and we still need to head to the organic butcher to get some chicken.

A moderately full cart. Mostly greens and whole grains. Lots of re-usable shopping bags.
