Oh Oh Those Summer Nights

As the evenings cool off, keep rocking those summer prints and throw on a cozy poncho to ward off the chill. Add woven and textural accessories and rough details like raw quartz crystal for a tougher, more rustic edge. As always, shoes you can walk in are a must.

Dark Blooms

A coy nod to Pretty Little Liars’ character Vivienne Darkbloom, this maxi dress uses a dark backdrop to highlight feminine florals. My favourite fringed black purse and some geometric jewelery add some hard lines to this otherwise soft look. Also taking my new Topshop Mid-heel slingbacks for a spin: heaven! Maybe even throw on a floppy black hat for added mystery and moodiness.

Cottage Bound - Vacation Checklist 2

What?! Twice in one day? Yes. This is my 87th entry on the ‘new’ blog. Because one page of ‘what to pack for the cottage’ doesn’t quite cut it, here is the other half of the hit list. Please leave room in your suitcase for: jelly shoes (for water walking and wet feet), a peplum top, sunscreen, bug repellent, striped bikini (a soaked suit is never fun to put back on, so bring a spare), lounge wear like a long tunic and drawstring pants, linen pants, and warm layers for night time by the bonfire.

I used to draw my vacation packing lists (no joke), so I would have a record of what I’d taken in case I lost my suitcase, and because it’s fun to draw, and so I could visualize what I wanted to wear before pulling it all out of the neatly arranged bag.

I’m an organizer to the core, but definitely in need of some time away from the city.

What do you consider a must pack for your vacations?

Fit Girl Challenge – Surprise Guest

Indulge

And now for something completely different. I was reading a lifestyle magazine and raised an eyebrow at the latest craze “Figurerobics”.

This new South Korean fitness trend is spearheaded by the Korean equivalent to a ‘hot mom’ – the delightfully fresh and motivating Jung Dayeon. If this is what moms look like in South Korea, barely out of high school and rocking short shorts (well!), count me in. If I look half as good as this for an investment of 30 minutes a day, I am willing to try it.

So, what is Figurerobics?

One of many coordinated fitness getups.

One of many coordinated fitness getups.

In their matchy-matchy fitness outfits, reminiscent of Christina Aguilera in her “Genie In a Bottle” days, this is a quick 30 minute workout series, with a whole bunch of different video options, that would be a perfect fit for days when you are not feeling like leaving the house, but want to move your body.

Genie in a Bottle.

Genie in a Bottle. Christina’s style is a definite inspiration for the Figurerobics look, which heavily references the 90’s cropped tops and cargo pants.

eDljOGw5MTI=_o_christina-aguilera---genie-in-a-bottle

Figurerobics is this video multiplied to the length of 30 minutes.

Looking a little like the extras from a Justin Timberlake video, these infinitely peppy and good looking workout folks made it very easy to forget the minutes rolling by.

Looking a little like the extras from a Justin Timberlake video, these infinitely peppy and good looking workout folks made it very easy to forget the minutes rolling by.

Deceptively small movements actually produce quite a good arm burn and get your heart rate up with a combination of dance (jazz) warm up, traditional workout class and sexy K-Pop moves (lots of hip rolls and encouraging winks from Jung as you complete your 8 counts of each movement).

All in all, this is a fun way to spend thirty minutes and I can see this becoming my go-to quick fix for snowy days this winter.

This summer has been all about trying new things. What is your favourite workout regimen?

Into the Deep: Artist Profile – FRANCISCO CASTRO LOSTALO

Art
Geysers - acrylic and resin - F Castro Lostalo (1)

Geysers by FRANCISCO CASTRO LOSTALO

I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean and what lies beneath. My rational/irrational fear (depending on what news you’re reading and how realistic you want to be about your chances of being killed due to cell-phone-related negligence/vehicular manslaughter/radiation) has always been sharks. But there is something so beautiful about sea life. I am especially drawn to the many legged creatures or ones with tendrils, like jelly fish, octopi and the like.

At the One of a Kind Show (2015), artist Francisco Castro Lostalo explored the depths of this inspiration with his larger than life (I hope) paintings.

The colours of this octopus make such a statement. I never get tired of looking. Big impact.

International Baccalaureate – An Open Letter to a Workshop Facilitator Who Didn’t Know What She Didn’t Know

Open Letters

I recently attended a workshop to prepare me for teaching a course called Theory of Knowledge in the IB Program. TOK “asks students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know.” A heavy task, to be sure. I wondered, before attending the Toronto conference, would I be up to the rigors of the academic environment? Was I up to the challenge of pushing students to think at this elevated level and to get them to engage in the kind of dialogue that really gets to the heart of ‘questioning what we think we know’?

I was relieved to realize, quite quickly, that we were all in the same boat. Our workshop had twelve teachers, from Canada and abroad, who were all ready to think about ‘knowing’. I suppose that given my background in equity studies, where thinking about my own privilege, ignorance, assumptions and lenses, I was well equipped to start thinking about how I ‘know’ things and how that might change depending on my own experiences and identity.

The twelve of us were remarkably similar for a group whose mission included ‘thinking about diverse perspectives’ and exploring knowledge systems like Indigenous, Religious and Historical areas of Knowledge. We were all white, all able-bodied, employed, English-speaking adults. And as far as I could tell, everyone but me was straight. That became apparent quite quickly.

————

Sometimes you don't know what you don't know until you are hit in the face with it; at some point, you have to consider that your ignorance has an impact on others. The biggest take away from my three-day conference could just as easily been taken from my grade nine's study of To Kill A Mockingbird: you can't really know a person, until you've stood in their shoes and walked around in them.

Welcome to my experience of Theory of Knowledge:

With a conference hosted in Canada, it would seem logical to have leaders be familiar with Canadian expectations regarding a teacher’s obligation to provide a safe and equitable classroom free from discrimination and hate speech. Differing opinions and exploring how we come to understand and establish what we ‘know’ is an important part of an IB education and certainly there are opportunities to explore these issues deeply and to look at sensitive issues that are globally relevant, but instructors need to be aware of how to deliver this material in a way that does not marginalize their class or create an oppressive learning environment; first and foremost, our students must feel safe and supported in order to engage in the rigorous academic challenges that we create in our programs, and consciously establishing respect for differences is a key part of this goal. Productive academic discourse is very valuable, but there was a definite lack of equity background and knowledge in my session and the instructor struggled to effectively create a safe space for dialogue about issues which are protected by law in Canada/Canadian schools. There were some very troubling materials and content recommended by the instructor (anti-gay marriage essays, etc), and no context or preamble was provided by her. As a lesbian who is out at work and fully supported by my school community it was extremely offensive to have to sit in a room while educated adults debated the value of a resource that proposed, from an ‘ethical’ standpoint, to eliminate me and my family from existence. The casual manner in which the material was introduced was very alarming. Facilitators of workshops should assume, as in their classes, that diverse identities are present in the room and that we are not statistics to be discussed dispassionately as though we are not present for the conversation. Certainly this is a huge issue of debate, globally, but it was not presented in a thoughtful or ethical manner. This had a very negative impact on my experience, and the instructor was extremely obtuse about her own lack of equity practices and how to create a safe(r) learning environment. On a positive note, it was a great teachable moment because it gave us lots to talk about at lunch, as many of the other teachers hadn’t considered the impact that articles of this kind can have on invisible minorities within the room, but it’s alarming to think about what a horrible effect this would have on a student if delivered in a similar manner in a school setting. IB, as I understand it, celebrates diverse perspectives and the IB Learner Profile strives to build Caring individuals. An awareness of these important points was markedly absent in the delivery of the workshop I attended.

————–

So, to you, Mme. Facilitator,

How did you picture that conversation going? What did you think a queer person in the room would feel while you debate their right to exist? Did you expect me to sit there, smiling, happily contributing to your discourse about the what a useful and well-written article this was?

I’ll leave you to ponder a Theory of Knowledge for a question I definitely know the answer to:

At what point does the human cost of an academic exercise outweigh its usefulness as a lesson? What is the value of subjecting a student to being a spectator to yet another example of oppression and dominance in discourse? I’m sure I could find a super article that eloquently outlines why rape is an effective strategical move and a brilliant tactic used in times of war to dehumanize and oppress a civilian population and wage psychological warfare on a nation you are trying to subjugate. I could probably find similarly well-written analyses of child-labour, slavery, racism, human trafficking, genital mutilation and myriad other issues…

But just because I can argue it, doesn’t mean I should. That much I know.

You’ve heard of rags to riches and ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ Well, the artists behind Cinderella Garbage have literally  turned garbage into gems with their line of gorgeous jewels.

To be honest, I don’t entirely understand how it works, but the idea of taking waste and making it into something new and shiny appeals to me on so many levels. This graphic helps shed some light on the process (assuming you speak French – which I do).

The Sweetest Thing: Cara Carmina – OOAK Artist Profile

Art

I was smitten with the bubbly, sweet personality and equally adorable artwork of Norma Andreu – the creator of Cara Carmina. I was first pulled in by her beautiful greeting cards, which featured illustrations that were vivid, imaginative and cute, with just the right amount of strangeness.

As the Cara Carmina website (http://www.caracarmina.com/#!portfolio) describes in the artist’s statement, the influences of Mexico’s culture and art, as well as a background in children’s illustration really bring together a playful set of circumstances in the work – and the results are just magical. Check out the website for pages and pages of portfolio proof – and you’ll fall for her work, too, I dare you not to.

I would love a set of the Frida dolls for my little one’s room (or my own, let’s be honest). They are so much cooler than the plastic, cookie cutter dolls mass-marketed to our young folks.

If dolls aren’t your thing, clothing, dioramas, cards, textiles and paper dolls are also on offer and available in her online shop, as well as on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/Caracarmina).

White Feather Designs: One of a Kind Artist Profile

Art

At this year’s One of A Kind Show I was really blown away by how far the market has come in terms of representing diverse local artists. There are some really wonderful things going on there and the show just keeps getting better. For the next two weeks, I will be featuring independent designers and artists from the show, highlighting my favourites.

Spring 2015 185

White Feather Design’s set-up was sleek and stylish. My wife and I worked the booth for Breanne one evening and had no trouble talking about our love of all things WFD; we did have trouble, at times, keeping up with the demand. Her booth was popular and filled with enough great work to satisfy a wide variety of style palates. Always a good thing.

Spring 2015 193

Cheers-ing to a great gig where we got to meet friendly art-loving folks and supporters of local businesses, while talking about great jewelery.

White Feather Designs, by Breanne Morrow, is an obvious place to start with the Artist Profiles for several reasons: 1) Breanne is a supremely talented artist and an all-round lovely human.  2) She is an entrepreneur and mother who has managed to make the dream a reality by taking her designing full-time. 3) Her work is original and beautiful, with excellent quality and detail that is worth every penny.

Some not-to-be-missed designs include the Herkimer diamond studs, enamel necklaces with tassels, geometric necklaces and cuffs in a variety of materials, and amazingly light 3D-printed jewelery in Stainless Steel, Matte Black, Brass or Sterling Silver with a brushed finish.

Spring 2015 192

I was a huge fan of the finger rings that fit on various spots (traditional or above the knuckles) and can be endlessly mixed and matched.

This was the necklace design was THE one for me. I picked up a handmade copper, brass and enamel necklace with tassels. I also got one for my stylish Mama.
