Christmas Cheer and …Beer

Indulge

Yesterday we went to the Distillery District to enjoy a stroll and some lunch, and incredibly unseasonal warm weather. The streets were decked out and we, oddly, were sporting our holiday colours.

Hohoho

Holiday cheer is apparent despite the conspicuous lack of snow.

Beer flights are our fave. We loved the Beetlejuice (3 x distilled and extra hoppy..get it?)
Kale Caesar salad and burgers: perfect for sharing.

Have a very merry Christmas and I’ll be seeing you soon.

Wish List

Indulge

Tell me what you want, what you really, really want: Something sweet, something I wouldn’t get for myself, something that you love – and want to share. I keep a running tab of things that have caught my eye on Pinterest, which definitely helps when  people are fishing for ideas.   Everyone is doing these ‘lists’. So, as a follow-up to yesterday’s Gift List entry, here is the companion piece: the Wish List. All photo credits and links can be found via my Pinterest page .

More green in my life. I’ve always wanted a fig tree. And textured vessels are so perfect instead of a pot.

If the shoe fits: some party heels. I rarely buy ‘frivolous’ shoes. So having someone treat me to it is always appreciated. Find these babies at WhoWhatWear.com

A gorgeous, swingy dress in a length that makes tights unnecessary. Something from Anthropologie is never a miss for me. The lines they carry are always timeless and the pieces have just enough unexpected detail to keep things interesting.

The gift of time: or a time piece. Offer to do something fun with me! Or wrap up some arm candy. I haven’t had a watch since I was in grade school. But this one is pretty and dainty.

Jewellery boxes with a vintage vibe. I love pretty things to store pretty things. These ones, from Anthropologie, come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Great headphones: the kind that you won’t confuse with someone else’s generic ones. These are great looking and help to brighten your day with the gift of music.

West Elm Vanity Boxes. More great pieces to keep your surfaces streamlined. These boxes in brass and stone are a polished and charming place to store your charms.

More on the theme of trinkets and storage, this beautiful hammered brass tray from Anthropologie is another item that would look perfect on a table top or dresser.

Something practical. Nothing makes me happier than a place for everything and papers are the worst. I would love this sleek, lightweight 2-drawer filing cabinet from Staples. Tucked discreetly beside my glossy white desk, it would keep things looking prim and proper.

Another practical choice, for a dancer: MEC’s Hut Booties – lightweight and great for keeping you warm between warmup and show time… I’ve had my eye on these for a few seasons. They’d also be great for camping, cottaging or regular round the house relaxation!

I love the retro vibe of this wall hanging. Made by the artist behind Rowan Studios, the Toronto designed products are available in their Etsy shop and come in a variety of dip-dyed colours!

Hope you get everything you want and deserve, including rest, peace and time with loved ones!

What’s on your list?

Everyone is doing it. Gift Lists. So, here’s mine; just in time (sort of) for the holidays:

And after all that trekking around, give your shoes a good buffing and put a shine on them with a great shoe kit. I never know what to get my brother and since he has great style, but is suuuuper picky, and never fills out a wish-list… this might be right on the money.

Hope your holiday is merry, bright and full of delight. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanzaa!

Pop up Shop

Indulge

checked out a great pop up event and a new club last light, with mixed reviews.

Started the night at a jewellery and fashion event pairing the talents of YYZ Imports (great affordable baubles and personal pals of mine) and Joao Paulo Guedes (a talented Brazilian menswear designer).

Jp’s work is somewhat unisex, popular with cool girls who pair leather emblazoned sweatshirts with their jeans and high tops or a cashmere play suit with leather epaulets with some stilettos.

The designer’s partner was celebrating his birthday so we all had cake.

#yyzimports #accessorizeforadventure premiered some new 3d printed skulls from their trip to the UK.

We busted out some past season faves.

Next we headed to Apt 200, a cool concept, but somewhat flat experience in actuality. The place is decorated like a hipster apartment/ loft space but it had all the posturing  and pretense you’d expect, unfortunately.

We went with some friends: a publicist who got us line bypass on the fly, and no cover ( natch), her model girlfriend and their friend, plus Al and I. And WE WEREN’T the pretentious ones.
People seemed more into posing on the couches and checking the slant of their toque or Degrassi hats to bother with dancing or having a good time. Sara summed I up: “there is a lot of ego going on tonight.”

So, obviously we played four-player Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and were home by one.

Brazil – I was that International Exchange Student

Indulge

It seems like so long ago, because it was half a lifetime ago. At sixteen, I got on a plane and left my friends, family and country, even my language behind. Wearing a red, Canadian exchange student blazer, and holding back tears, I said goodbye to everything – sad, not because I was going, but because I was leaving things I loved behind.

A year seemed like it would be forever, but by the time the first weeks had passed, it seemed like I’d never have enough time to do all the things I wanted to do before our time was up.

11221707_10154295393270110_5291458348279643773_n

In a year I saw more of Brazil than I could imagine and made so many memories. I traveled to the Pantanal region, went to see the Iguacu Falls, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay (for a handball competition). I traveled to the southern tip of the country, to visit friends I’d met, and all across the Northeast of the country on a whirlwind trip that became one of the most important experiences of my life.

12246885_10154295392305110_239871465047446963_n

If human history, in some areas of the world, is measured in B.C. and A.D., I measure my life in these terms: Before Brazil. After Brazil. It was formative, transformational and completely changed who I am.

A few days ago, a sad event brought a flood of memories and people, from the past, from the far reaches of the world, together; our old friend, Erin, was killed in a drunk driving accident. In my mind she is still sixteen, just as I remember her. She was a bright light, and seemed to have changed very little from the fun-loving, warm person we all knew when we were sixteen years old.

The happy side-effect of this tragedy is that we’ve all been reminiscing, reconnecting and revisiting those wonderful memories – where Green Day’s “Time of Your Life” was our song.

Here are some of those moments, from before digital cameras existed. When 90 exchange students from over 20 countries spent 30 days together travelling across the Nordeste region of Brazil.

Beijos and muito carinho to o povo do Rotary1999.

Brazil 1999 – We saw the stadium where Ronaldo played and we toured Rio De Janeiro.

We met friends from Denmark, France, USA… and went on a cross country bus trip… taking our pale skin to varying shades of golden.

We took two boats out to Angra Dos Reis, a remote, unspoiled area off the coast, drinking coconut water, dancing to music and jumping off the side of the ship into crystal water.

12196080_10156208073290514_1522954594075456822_n

We visited Lencois, Maceio, O Linda and other small towns, growing close to one another and breaking down barriers of language, gender and culture. I never felt close to my friends in high school the way I ended up feeling on this trip.

12247058_10154295393415110_299296805073150101_n

Being away from your family and friends, and all the expectations about who you should be, who you were and who you are, really let us explore who we wanted to be. And in all that hilarity and freedom we found incredible things. We were open to new knowledge and experiences.

12240023_10154295392855110_683310896250783587_n

There was a lot of posing. A lot of art. Culture. Silliness.

A lot of silliness. This is Anthony. He is from the middle-of-nowhere, USA.

11228025_10154295392575110_5902295734034760279_n

And we had the moments every high school movie promises; there were the cool girls, the shy ones, the wild ones. And we all co-existed.

12241700_10154295392400110_8307167779407816186_n

We explored cities and ruins, museums and forests. Not caring about trivial things like fashion, or Instagram, or Facebook. Because we didn’t have those things. We did have a whole lot of matching t-shirts.

And Muscle Poses.

And this.

We bonded over our home countries. Over music and dancing. Over our love of the beach, or reading, or sunscreen. Or over who saw the nurse most often (chicken pox, mono, bronchitis, Dengue Fever, heat stroke). But our alliances and flags were only superficial.

10569073_10153107010812413_6030843463452674110_n

We beared it all. Making ourselves vulnerable. Having the best time.

12241530_10153107011057413_5917674681611817320_n

We sang with guitars in courtyards in the moonlight. Danced at live drumming concerts and took the band back to our hotel. We partied in the treetops (literally) at clubs suspended in the trees. We sweat our butts off at outdoor beach concerts. We put sunscreen on each other’s backs, laughed at how much weight we all gained, signed yearbooks of memories and promises to each other.

12246928_10153107011212413_911153737153817981_n

We pulled pranks.

And we were better people because of each other.

I miss you, Brazil. I miss the life we had there. I miss that closeness. And I am forever grateful for the time we shared.

Theatre: a day in Niagara on the Lake.

Art, Indulge

I spent Friday at Niagara-on-the-lake’s Shaw Festival for a day of theatre and sight seeing.

Itinerary:Get ready.  Vintage dress, with bat wing sleeves and a YYZ Imports necklace.

YYZ Imports Necklace

Assorted Rings… ring finger (White Feather Designs’ custom engagement ring)

Birds, and bling…

Getting ready for the day out.

My dressing room is my 7-year-old-self’s dream come true.

Makeup: a gold smokey eye and pale pink lip. Inspired by my magazine perusin, I added a hint of gold to the inner corner for aime sparkly and a hint of vintage bling, and hair to match – a bit teased up and sixties looking but softer.

A look I pulled from an old magazine.

I’m a daytime smokey eye fan. And adding some gold to the inner corner is on trend for fall.

Gilded Lids.

…bangs are the obvious part of a look… Cause I already have ’em.

Checking all the boxes for Fall’s ‘Hit List’: Big Bang.

Next…Get there: tour the Shaw Festival Theatre. We went on a backstage tour and same te costume department, scene shop and trap doors below the stage.

The Festival Theatre: We had a great backstage tour.

Dressing Rooms

Models of show sets. These maquettes are used to show actors (and production crew) what the full scale sets will look like as they rehearse and plan their show.

Costume designs are sketched up and provided to the costume department to invent, re-invent, sew and create.

Final pieces bring to life the artistic vision.

The photo above shows this creation as it appeared on the stage.

Costumes from past shows were on display and completely gorgeous.

This costume appeared in last season’s production of Cabaret. Fanciful and bright!

Another real-life costume, up close, for us to see the craftsmanship and detail.

And here is a still from the stage production… brought to life!

Sometimes pieces need to be distressed, to appear worn or damaged in subsequent scenes. That all takes place in the costume shop.

After our tour, we headed for lunch at Fournos; saganaki and souvlaki!

Opa!

And gelato at Carlotta’s. The best in town!

Always spoiled for choice! More treats at Carlotta’s

The small town charm is amplified by the presence of many horse drawn carriages that take tourists around the downtown.

Fall colours in full effect.

Next season the Shaw Festival is putting on Sweeney Todd, Alice and A Woman of No Importance, among other fantastic shows. I will definitely be back for that.

As the theatre let out, before you know it, it’s midnight. Sweet dreams. It’s almost Halloween!

Tove Lo – Queen of the Clouds

Indulge

ab681ff4d9ff360937e4cbcd53b8fa3d

You might know her from her radio-popular tracks like “Habits” and “Talking Body”. However, her queen of the clouds tour treated the audience at Sound Academy to a nice long set of sexy, unapologetic tunes that had Tove Lo in full command of her fans. When she said hands up, our hands were up. In her song “Moments” she says what many of us think:

“I’m not the prettiest you’ve ever seen
But I have my moments, I have my moments
Not the flawless one, I’ve never been…
But I have my moments, I have my moments…

But on good days I am charming as f*&k”

cd01cbd2a2a6638785eb6ceaec3757da

There were outfit changes, from a jumpsuit into a sexy, studded bodysuit.

And she was, as her lyrics say,”charming as f*&k.”

I was totally smitten by her candour as she explained how she felt last time she came to Toronto, surprised by the warmth of the reception and by how many people, half way across the world, knew her music.

89f5986dfdfe60d445cde3c6f7812cd1

Natural and unpretentious.

1ad8524b5431afd987fbd1e7e114ec7d

We were treated to what I learned is becoming her signature ‘moment’… the boob flash. It came as a total surprise to me, but the crowd went completely insane as she gave us a gratuitous 2 seconds of her beautiful breasts. Then continued on … like it was no big deal. And it wasn’t. She speaks in interviews with the press about why she started and continued to include a little skin in her show.

If you are going to use nudity, there is no better way that a strategic 2- second (max) flash of nipple (#freethenipple) at the climax of your song ‘Talking Body’ – while you defiantly peel down the straps of your blinged-out bodysuit.

b1ewJwe

Obviously this is a photo from a previous show, because obviously I was watching the show, not standing with my hands over my head blocking people’s view with my phone.

Tove Lo Explains Why She Won’t Stop Flashing the Crowd

I love a good feminist protest, and her performance was perfect parts bold, powerful and adorable. She had the crowd crouched down, jumping up, waving, hushed, belting it out and throwing heart signs. Awww. If you read the comments on her explanation, you invariably get a bunch of dudes (sorry, dudes) decrying this action as ‘un-feminist’… but isn’t feminist precisely about the right to CHOOSE what you do with your body?

Back to Tove Lo…

94340039140b2ce0f6c0cff635dc82d5

She also melted my heart with a super cheesy, One Direction-style heart-hand shout out. The crowd responded with big love. How cute, I think, as I make a face in response to this dorky but endearing gesture. She can get away with it.

429bd21f68245248f9c48d9bfa0f0a26

Cause when she belts it out, she is powerful and dominating.

7ac974d3355246452acb3c48788b717b

Big Lights. Grand Finale.

She sounded as amazing live as she does on her album. Impressive.

After the show there was a crush of people, waiting for taxis and trying to funnel (unsuccessfully) out of the single lane exit of the only venue parking lot. After about 5 minutes of moving NOT AT ALL we opted to turn the car off, except for the stereo, and got out to hula hoop. I just happened to have 12 hula hoops in the car because I had brought them in to do a fun physical warmup with my class this morning.

Five girls, a bunch of hoops, a crowd pumped up and primed from the concert, the Toronto skyline in the back ground: this caused a flurry of cell phone videos, none of which I could easily locate, and other people began getting out of their cars to ask if they could join.

It was definitely the perfect way to end an already amazing night!

Night at the Museum – With Cairo

Indulge, style

The Very Blustery Day

On a chilly Friday night, after a long week of going out every evening, we had the chance to go see our friend’s band, Cairo, play at the Royal Ontario Museum. The ROM opens its doors for evenings of live music, food and drink, all whilst enjoying the fossils, gems and artifacts, where people come to see and be seen with the art and culture from seven until the wee hours.

Our talented friend plays electric violin and adds her dreamy voice to the sound of Cairo, which is consequently – one of the most attractive bands I’ve ever laid eyes on. Their music filled the space and drew a crowd, and was followed by diverse acts such as DJ Sanga Genesis (clever!) who spun tracks that had our booties shaking, and downstairs in the main hall (beneath the brontosaurus skeleton) there was a live brass oldies band, Oldies 990.

Food included naan and butter chicken wraps, deconstructed sushi (served ironically beneath manatee and sharks in the sea life display area), mac ‘n cheese sandwiches, ostrich burger, beet burger, Indian tacos… and a whole host of other incredible nibbles. If you can get out to the ROM this fall/winter to soak up some of this fun… do it!

End of Summer- Fergus, Ontario

Indulge

Earlier this year, one of my very favourite people moved to Fergus; so on one weekend, as the air became crisp and the nights got cooler, we went up to visit. Our dinner and slumber party was perfect parts small town pace and good friend hangout.

Bonfires and smores, enjoyed in the backyard, which has a firepit and faces undeveloped farmland.

Ladder-ball and bean bag toss. All the good, clean fun you could ask for. With ample heckling.

Weird and wonderful terrarium house-warming gifts. I’m bringing her some tiny animals (to replace the gnomes, which she finds disturbingly creepy).

Visiting the neighbours’ horse-dog.

Rewind, back to the construction of our games.

Feline friends.

You can’t go to a small town and not stop at the local chip wagon for hot dogs and fries!

Bye bye, Fergus. Bye bye, summer.
