Dial It Up: Choose Your Volume

Dial It Up: Choose Your Volume

I’m loving the oversized v-neck tunics from Joe Fresh. I got one in purple and another in crimson to share with my wife. Huge perk of our situation. It can go so many ways, from minimal to decadent glam.

As always, heel height has a huge impact on the wearability- and on my crankiness, so I always suit the shoe to the task.

Her Weapon of Choice Was A Bold Patterned Dress

Her Weapon of Choice Was A Bold Patterned Dress
One of my go to outfits, when I’m in a rush or don’t have time to fuss, is tall black boots, thick leggings and a short dress or tunic.
Today it’s a red and black printed Kensie dress with a zipper back and black side panels.
It’s great for packing, too. Hence my long weekend outfit, which pretty much fulfills the formula: Yellow and black tunic dress in a damask print. Black moto legging. Knee high Frye boots. A great necklace from White Feather Designs. Ready for eating, playing with the nieces and relaxing with family.

My basement makeover

Home Sweet

Last week my basement looked like this: ewww.

The painted concrete was cracked and peeling.

After a flood in the basement  and six weeks of waiting for our foundation repair… Our floor finally went in.

This morning the basement looked like this:

And Tonight:

We have a (mostly) complete basement bedroom and yoga/ping pong room. Still some things to add and shelves to fill, but it is Infinitely better.

A hard day’s work, and two trips to Brampton to pick up bookshelves for thirty bucks, means our derelict basement is now a place to enjoy – complete with our turntable, sewing table, easel, ping pong table and space to accommodate guests.

cheers to family and giving thanks

Indulge

Thanksgiving in Niagara on the Lake is always beautiful.  With our family it’s a tradition to enjoy the best of Niagara’s wineries  to do some tastings.
First stop, Konzelmann Estates.

We picked up a tasty Peach wine and some Shiraz.

Hamminf it up for the camera. My mum and my wife.

Next stop was at Big Head winery. That deserves its own entry – more on that later, but a huge piece of cheese and 15 wines later – Big Head is one of the best times I’ve ever had out at a tasting.

And then.. It’s time for a fabulous meal with family.

Baked Brie and artisanal cheeses.

 Roasted potatoes

   Roast beef

 The table set for eight.

    My grandparents’ carving mirror.

A full plate. Brussel sprouts. Asparagus. Fennel. Roast beef. Potatoes. Yorkshire pudding.

Pulling out the stops with the big reds.

Pumpkin pie cheesecake (made with tofu) a la mode.

   With late harvest Riesling.

Cheers to family and delicious food!

Breweries & Thanksgiving

Uncategorized

it’s a tradition when we visit my family that we stop in at our favourite breweries. The locals are friendly to a fault, and the food pairings with a beer flight are fun, fun, fun.
A five beer tasting flight: black lager… Guess which one that is

Perfect for sharing as you compare notes: hint of pineapple? Oh, that one has a really smokey flavour. Yup. It’s actually called Smokey and the Bandit. Good job.

Bottoms up.

Silversmith is in an old church. Last time we were here some patrons asked us if we were famous. Are you in a band?!

The blackboards keep tabs on the drinks available on tap. And a running list of names shows the love – each person has had a beer bought for them by someone – to be enjoyed on their next visit

The mixed dozen oysters.

A delicious fish po’boy … Or what’s left of it

Down the road … Oast House. We served their craft beer at our wedding

We love their Barn Raiser and Farmhouse Saison

They had a neat sour – the Biere de Mars

Check out the description of the Indie , Hootenanny and pumpkin Country Bumpkin.

A message for our friends, who were here with us last time – when we had to hoist up an eleven year old to get ping pong balls out of the rafters.

Live music and a lively crowd. Happy Thanksgiving!

“Selfie” the Opera

Art, Foodie, Indulge

I got an invite to attend a workshop of a new Opera, Selfie. It was a witty, ironic, restrained but powerful performance, about online and text bullying. Inspired by current events that lead, ultimately, to numerous suicides, truly important issues were covered by this work in progress.

We started our night at Ethiopique for a delicious dinner.

In the distillery district, Tapestry Opera is housed in the hive of artists, businesses and studios.

the show: intimate, on book, charming, funny and raw.

As a workshop for the piece,  the director and writer were seeking feedback and asked us to offer up our thoughts post-show.

Loved being part of the process and thinking about how this kind of art will help change our schools and cultural landscape.

On the Dot

Two for one: Today it’s two times the fun with options for polka dot tops, high waist black trousers, belted or tied with a bow. Get some pattern play going with a big cat slide, or amp it up with some crimson heels. Add a red lip. For bonus points, try In Style’s suggestion for a new take on the cat eye:
