Cottage Bound - Vacation Checklist 1

I’m very excited to be heading back to the island of my childhood to spend some much needed Q.T. with my wife and our family… lakeside. My suitcase is packed, and I love a good visual; with a pair of boyfriend jeans, a retro bikini, band t, coverup, deck shoes, a onesie, hat and shades. I’m ready to relaxxxxx.

Heading to a conference. Great way to spend a summer. Especially when you just so happen to get to stay in the same hotel where you spent your wedding night. So, now that you know you’ll be sitting in the evenings in a roof top hot tub, enjoying blackout curtains and having your beautiful wife join you there for three nights… you’re left with the question of what to wear.

This could be like many teacher things, and involve a wide array of styles – from cargo shorts and polo shirts, to pencil skirts and blouses. I’m going to aim for a happy mix of comfortable, bright and eclectic – add a dash of confidence and no one will know that I’ve never been trained in TOK before (Theory of Knowledge *an International Baccalaureate Program course about ‘Ways of Knowing’ and ‘Areas of Knowledge’).  The initial email was full of so much jargon and abbreviations that I whimpered and called my friend Jenn for help with translations. Never fear – I will look poised and competent, absorbing as much as I can from 3 days of professional development.

Patterned skirt and blouse, with shoes you can walk in. Perfect for the journey to the venue and for walking post-session.

A maxi-dress and cropped white blazer. Appropriate for a summer meeting, but lose the hat - instead I'll be flat iron- curling my lob.

A shell in a solid colour (black for me, with a nice wide neck) and a high-waisted skirt in a bubbly print (I'll be wearing citrine and black and grey geometric). Add some pretty black patent leather peep toe wedges.

I’ll suss out the level of business in the boardroom (conference center? lounge? we’ll see), and determine how dressy to go based on what I encounter on day one.

I have a dress almost exactly like this; same shade with a swirling cream pattern. Paired with a great necklace and laser cutout leather wedge gladiators... I'm all set for daytime and dinner afterwards.

I don't have anything quite like this, but I like the vibe. The patterned frock and sweet jacket with a bold contrasting necklace. Do-able.

Simple and comfortable. This skirt is my favourite colour and stands out (probably always) but especially paired with black.

Each day after the conference I’ll hit the gym at the hotel, and then meet friends in the evenings, pretending that I still live downtown and am not a fixture of suburbia.

Paradise Found – A Love Poem to Santorini

style

Some smart musical theatre lyricist said to “start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.” But for today, let’s think of this as an editorial to capture the magic of a destination wedding in Santorini, Greece.

Here is my ode to the beautiful friends, food, architecture and faces of the island. What do you wear on a vacation that might include walking, hiking, shopping, lounging, swimming, riding around on a four-wheeler, a wedding and…. adventure? I think I got this one figured out. I had lots in my suitcase and felt ready for anything.

10410888_10154076669829126_5152249348792163156_n

Oia’s Jenga-like architecture is every bit the post card you imagine – homes stacked precariously on top of one another, along the cliffs and hillsides. One person’s roof is another’s infinity pool.

The El Greco Hotel – the most amazing experience. The staff was just spectacular (see the “LOVE” story about our stray puppy resue). This was home base for the duration of our trip.

IMG_0314

The Greek are very specific. Don’t do it. Do what? Don’t leave – is how we felt at the end of our trip.

IMG_0275

We rented ATVs for two days and explored the entire island.

From the terrace of Kyprida (restaurant) we could see a pack of kittens playing in the setting sun on the roof top.

IMG_0187

A burst of colour – the doors of Santorini were a favourite study for us. The tank and maxi skirt were a great choice in a breezy fabric, able to be tucked up for riding the ATV, but still comfortable for walking or dining. The cardigan was a must, to limit sun exposure on the shoulders. American Apparel jelly sandals let me go from town to beach, from the hot sand and straight into the water.

High waisted linen trousers and a cropped striped t-shirt, with Keds for walking all day and driving on the ATV.

Window shopping in Thira, Santorini. A ruffled, one shoulder dress in a bold print got me a compliment from a complete stranger. And an elderly Greek gentleman told me I had the look of a European ‘fashionista.’ I’ll take it.

Blue beads, headscarf (to save me from helmet hair), sunnies, navy blue culottes and a lace top, with comfortable shoes for walking all day! Plus a bucket back that fit nicely into the ‘trunk’ of the ATV.

The El Greco was simply – the loveliest, most welcoming resort. It was beautiful to look at and very luxurious, but that was the tip of the iceberg. The staff was just SO nice. They helped us at every turn, especially in finding a home for the sweet puppy we fell for.

Our little sweetheart, Gaia, stole our hearts. We got her microchipped, vaccinated and the hotel's staff helped us to find her a home when we were unable to get the documents to take her back to Canada with us.

One of my favourite moments in Thira, at night, was seeing the gorgeous and uber-cool Elle Macpherson. She is stunning in person, and was so gracious about taking a photo even though she MUST have been bombarded 24/7. I was as close as I’ve ever been to star-struck. She is such an icon and I’ve just been re-watching Friends. It made my night!

IMG_9811

I loved all the donkey iconography and sculptures – a day of wandering and night out for dinner requires a beautiful Anthropologie tie dyed dress with lower back cutout.

Plates to break at the Greek Wedding!

IMG_9698

Picked up this Anthropologie dress, regularly $258, for $30. Paired with cork and gold heels, and some bling-y costume jewellery, it was perfect for dancing the night away. I thought about wearing something lighter, more beachy, but the weight and structure of this fabric actually held up really well to the mediterranean heat and humidity… and the dance party that lasted ’til 3 am. Allia also wore a cheap and cheerful Grecian inspired, red satin maxi dress with halter bared shoulders and a drawstring waist, and gold accents.

IMG_9649

The ceremony and reception took place at Oceanides, right on the water with a pool and tables surrounded by the sea and candle light.

IMG_9630

Hamming it up for the camera. The wedding was like a high school reunion (with the best possible outcome). Turns out the bride, Lindsday, stayed in touch with all the nicest, most sincere and warm people we went to school with. Catching up with them was amazing, as was meeting their new partners and families, and having them meet Allia.

Truly back to the beginning. This is day one. We had no idea what an incredible trip we were in for! Thank you, Santorini, and big thanks to all the friends, new and old, who made this a wonderful week in paradise.

Muska: Boutique Profile – Santorini, Greece

style

On vacation in Greece, my friend (the bride) found a beautiful boutique in the maze of Thira’s streets where she purchased gorgeous jewellery and a tunic. I was smitten and she literally drew me a map of how to track down the shop. Belted, or loose, the tunic she found was on my must-have list the second I saw it.

The day after the wedding; the bride, Lindsay, was ready to relax on the beach. Tunic/beach coverup from Muska - Thira, Santorini.

Muska has jewellery, textiles and two items of clothing. But the two items were both pretty amazing. Keeping it small and doing it right were exactly the right choice for this boutique. The tunic they offered had interesting details and beautiful fabric. This would definitely be my travel souvenir, plus my wife was equally excited to share this piece. We don’t see the bride enough in Toronto life to worry about bumping into each other in the same outfit, and she was more than happy to share her find!

Lindsay, the bride, rocked this entire outfit the day after her wedding. Looking so perfectly relaxed and stylish.

Each piece of jewellery was distinctive and the colours were exactly as you’d expect from the Greek islands. Statement pieces, indeed.

Muska‘s owner/operator was friendly and lovely to speak with; he even sent us to a delicious restaurant for our final night in Thira. All they need to do now is to get themselves onto Google Maps and to set up a web store. Good bye, Santorini! And Thank you – Efkharisto!

Endless Summer: an Urban Adventure – YYZ Imports’ Summer Shoot

style

Welcome back, summer in Toronto. We had another awesome day in the sunshine, romping around on Queen Street West. The Queen Street streetcar was named one of the world’s BEST trolly rides, which completely makes sense as the tracks take you from east to west (or vice versa) from beach, through Cabbage Town, the busy Yonge Street and financial district, past City Hall, the Opera and Ballet, Much Music and the former Speaker’s Corner, along Queen Street’s shopping district, and on to the hip West-end. It’s a ride full of colour and intersecting cultures. For three bucks that’s pretty good value.

For YYZ Imports’ “Endless Summer” collection we hit the streets and found some excellent places to showcase the wares from Jess and Bern, who have brought some very cool pieces home from abroad.

People stopped us on the street to see what was going on, and many of the passers-by wanted to know where they could buy the pieces on display.

I loved this pop of colour so much that I took the whole outfit with me the following week on vacation!

Styling this shoot was the perfect inspiration for my own travels. I even borrowed a few pieces from Jess, one of YYZ’s owners, for my trip to Greece. It was my own personal vacation-look-book, complete with live models.

Great arm candy, on a very foxy lady.

All these awesome pieces were shot in one afternoon by Carmen Farrell, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Carmen-Farrell-Photography/111550845554690 and are available right now on YYZ Imports’ page. The colours are undeniably vibrant and the pieces add such a punch to brights, or a nice canvas of white. Lastly, another thing I love is that these pieces support two local entrepreneurs who are making travel and style, their passions, a reality.

One of my favourite funny aspects of the day was the makeshift hula hoop changeroom that the girls put together, facilitating some stealthy public outfit swaps. We shot in a park along the busy streetcar route and watching the models pop out of the hoop in new clothes drew a bit of a crowd.  To celebrate, we ended our afternoon at The Beaver – eating chicken tikka nachos. Delish. Cheers to summer and to all the adventures you can handle!

Shop on a Dime

style

Well, maybe slightly more than a dime. Joe Fresh clothing has long been a staple of grocery store runs, for people who can’t imagine driving to a different place to get eggs and swimsuits. Joe is named for its designer, Mr. Mimran, of Club Monaco fame, and the spouse of Pink Tartan’s designer, Kimberley Newport-Mimran, which makes him one half of a power couple in Canadian fashion. Joe  is always doing wearable versions of trends (and basics), cut for people with hips and thighs… and more modest salaries.

Here is my hit list of Summer/Spring items that (for less than $200 total) can work seamlessly into my current wardrobe to amp it up (with comfort as a key criteria).

Paint splattered Boyfriend jeans, for a girl with no boyfriend. Usually, this cut is difficult if you have ample booty and a small waist. You risk having a gap at the back big enough to hid a grapefruit. Not so, here. Plus, they have a bit of stretch. For $39... yes.

Next up Culottes. Long suffering butt of jokes about skirt-pants. This outmoded item is back and here's why: it's SO comfortable, has the cut of a trouser in the hips, pockets!, none of the thigh-rubbing of skirts and can be worn high with a crop top or something tucked in... or low and casual. I got these (now sold out) $29 babies in navy and moss green.

I wouldn’t style them like this. But, with a breezy printed top, Breton stripes, a nautical tank, tied sleeveless button-up, these could be a wear 6 days in a row summer suitcase MUST that is lighter than jeans and more interesting than yoga pants. Lemon and orange print, bra top and high waisted bottom. This one is a winner.

It’s hard not to indulge when all these items (plus some sleep shorts) can be scooped up for less than what some (some meaning ‘not me’) people pay for a pair of jeans.

I took a break from Joe Fresh following the tragic (seriously) events involving the collapse of their overseas factory, which killed and injured workers; the company has really put time and effort into renewing their commitment to ensuring that their facilities worldwide adhere to Canada’s standards for standards for workers (health and safety), as well as human rights, and that keeps me feeling peaceful about supporting their company with my shopping dollar.

They seem to be back on the up and up. So, next time you need some ice cream, pick up a pair of jeans, and some culottes, too.

Shake Up Your Make Up

style

For the past few days I’ve been brushing up on my make-up skills, taking a cue from the bright young things on Youtube. Not for no good reason, and not without impact; at least seven people commented specifically on my eye makeup. Not that this should be a goal for getting ready or feeling happy with your life (in general). As the pictures illustrate, I toned it down quite a bit for work (and work lighting) and for face to face life with real people, most of whom are under the age of 18.

Thanks, Makeupandartfreak (the Youtuber who created this video) for your adorable delivery and a very easy to follow vid:

I have some pretty solid technique and know-how with my everyday makeup, but I was feeling like I hadn’t changed it up in a while. I can’t say that it didn’t make a difference. I had numerous comments on my eye makeup.

Open and definitely lifted. The tutorial specified that if you have lashes that create a turned-down look, this shape will work to open the eye up and help it to look lashier.

This photo, taken at my desk in fluorescent lighting, serves at least to prove that the effect is … significantly better and more ‘awake looking’ than my average sweep of bronze + mascara.

So, if you’re wondering

a) Should I try something new?

Yes, why not.

b) Can I pull it off?

Yes, the sheer number of tutorials out there makes it accessible and easy to find a look that will be fun (and foolproof). There are thousands of twelve-year-olds learning to make themselves up like Kim K (disconcerting), so as an adult, this is both appropriate and manageable.

c) Is it really worth the 13 minutes it takes to watch the video?

Probably not. But it’s fun and I was able to eat cereal while doing this.

What tutorials are inspiring you? And what looks are you wanting to try out?

For the video I tested for myself, watch MakeupAndArtFreak‘s “How to lift Droopy Eyes… etc.”  And remember. It’s just makeup. It should be fun!

Lisa Ray, Fusia and… Me?

My wife recently attended the launch party of the newest issue of Fusia magazine, which stands for Female – Fusion – Asia. One of Fusia’s beautiful, glossy covers.

At the launch party of the most recent issue, the spectacular, gutsy actor Lisa Ray was in attendance and the crowd came together to celebrate both the magazine and Lisa Ray’s inspiring contributions to it. Amidst incredible performances by singers and messages from the magazine’s creative team, Lisa spoke about her battle with cancer and overcoming it – a story full of hope. She has long been a visible face of South Asian women’s style, and her choice to pursue inclusive, challenging roles, like the leads in I Can’t Think Straight and The World Unseen, makes her a role-model for those of us who have been yearning for more diverse representation of culture and sexuality in our media. The magazine is exceedingly well put together and betrays none of its humble roots as a labour of love, produced as a passion project by a full-time working mom.

With all this said, imagine my surprise as I perused the issue, brought home by my wife, Allia, and found that our friends’ jewelery line was featured, and by extension, so was my face (bottom right).

By her own report, Allia says the night was dazzling, sleek and intimate, filling The Berkeley with beautifully dressed, impeccably-styled women – exactly the kind of crowd to inspire and be inspired by Fusia Magazine.

For Spring, despite the urge to update my closet, I’m looking to find something that feels new, without spending a cent. So I look into the wardrobe and re-imagine the pairings. Here are some key pieces, mixed, matched and reworked for a spectrum of looks.

For a day that feels bright, crisp white; a cropped blazer, bold jewelery, sweater with thin gold stripe for subtle texture and a flirty lace skirt. Add nude heels to keep the focus on the multi-tonal white palette. Perfectly sweet.

For brisk weather, and the unpredictability of those Spring days, swap in some leggings and a peep-toe wedge, a black blazer and chain necklace for a more tomboyish edge.

One step further, a leather jacket and platform spike heels add an element of hard-edge to contrast the sweet side of lace. Three looks, for an array of temperatures and times of day. Have fun in your closet!
